1960 Asahi, Chevrolet Bel Air Station Wagon in Original Box

1960 Asahi, Chevrolet Bel Air Station Wagon in Original Box

Outstanding 4-door tin litho Chevrolet Bel Air Station Wagon manufactured by Asahi Toys (ATC). Gorgeous near mint condition complete with original box. Box also grades high (EXC+ to NM).

Rear wheel friction drive vehicle works beautifully. Fantastic two tone copper and white vehicle with silver trim. Speeding jet logos featured on both rear quarter panels and doors. Authentic Bel Air logo lithoed onto front quarter panels. "Chevrolet" lithoed across the front hood. The edges of the tail fins were highlighted with silver trim. The roof was embossed with parallel lined "luggage rack".

1960-61 was a hybrid year with many of the cars new "speedy" styling. Front fenders are rounded, yet Chevrolet was still incorporating the wide fish-tail fins from the late 1950's.

As a toy, the station wagon is particularly difficult to manufacture because of the length and lack of roof support. In addition to the front celluloid windshield. Wrap around celluloid was used to cover the rear windshield plus the two adjacent side windows. Interior is embossed tin litho. Steering wheel and dashboard details are lithographed. Chassis is solid black plate with silver exhaust and frame details.

Chrome plated components include front and rear windshields, front and rear bumpers, and headlight/grille assembly. The tires are solid black rubber with embossed lithoed hubs. Rear license plate lithoed "1961".

The box was elegantly and simply designed with a full panel, full color illustration of the actual car. Minimal text was used so as not to take anything away from the center image. The car is shown against a multicolored background which changes from the outermost blue exterior to a white interior. It's the white coloring that makes contact with the car. Popular ATC Santa logo printed on the lower left corner. Simpler illustrations were used on the cover aprons and sides, however it's interesting to point out that a different drawing was printed on every panel. That's not seen too often. The box bottom is teal color.
